Anthropological Study of the Dental Arch and Palate in Korean


Abstract
The author has studied the plaster impressions of the dental arches and palates which were made of 205 Korean males and 152 females bioscopically and biometrically and determined their parameters and the following conclusions have been drawn.
1) The most common type of dental arch is that of ellipse and it comprises 4900 of all cases. The remainders of the types are parabola, rcunded square and U-shape in decreasing order. There are no differences between both sexes and upper and lower jaws.
2) As for the distributions of occlusal types, 39% comprises the largest group in which elliptical arch is opposed by the elliptical one. -Successive decreasing order is as follows; parabola vs. parabola, ellipse vs. parabola, parabola vs. ellipse, rounded square vs. rounded square and U-shape vs. U-shape. No difference is found between both sexes.
3) Occurrence of the M-shaped incisors is found to be of approximately 13% in the upper jaw and 25% in the lower jaw with no significant variations according to sex.
4) The most common type of sagittal vault in palate is that of slightly curved S-shape and it comprises 37% of all cases. The remainders of the types are moderately curved S-shape, slant, strongly curved S-shape and convex in decreasing order.iThe mostcommon type of transverse vault in palate is that of weakly rounded trapezoid and it comprises 40% of all cases. The remainders of the types are weak round, weakly rounded square, ;veakiy rounded V-shape and W-shape in decreasing order. No differences are found between both sexes in the vaults.
5) Though there are no marked differences in the length, axial length and angle of triangular area of the dental arch due to sex, the male is larger than the female in the width, width of triangular area, arc length and index of the dental arch in the region of molar area. These differences are meaningless with respect to upper and lower jaw variations.
6) Sexual differences appear to have no significant bearings on the length and angle of triangular area of the palate. However, male is found to have larger over the female in the width, height and index of the palate in the region of molar area and volume of the palate.
